Starting this month, we’re gifting ourselves a virtuous summer. After writing three cocktail books together over the last three years, we’ve definitely felt the effects of stress and too much…shall we say…cocktail recipe testing? So, we were delighted when Sahadi’s, the renowned Brooklyn specialty foods shop in Brooklyn, reached out to us for a recipe using ingredients available on their website, a bevy of high quality nuts, dried fruits, spices, and more.
To give ourselves an energy boost, we developed a snack that we could take to our new writing studio here in Philadelphia. Our Apricot Macadamia Bliss Balls with Turmeric are small suns designed to brighten the afternoons and fuel us through rounds of laptop-to-yoga-mat-and-back work sessions. If balance is the key to life (and a good cocktail), then we want to bring more of it into our days together as we collaborate on our future projects. Sibling goal #1!
We hope you enjoy this mixture of tart-sweet apricots and creamy macadamia nuts (our favorite nut of the moment ‘cuz it’s ketogenic), blended with golden turmeric to combat inflammation. Stuff each ball with a bright-tasting Golden Berry, dredge each little planet in raw pistachios and some flaked black salt, et voila, you have a glorious snack.
Oh, okay, we may have soaked the apricots in some rum first. Just can’t help ourselves!
Want to try this recipe? Sahadi’s is offering our readers a special discount code for free shipping during the month of June; just use discount code summer17 when you shop online at Sahadi's. You can pick up all of the ingredients for this recipe on the website. Note: we were really impressed with how quickly our shipment arrived and by the re-sealable pouches that hold the dried fruits and nuts. Makes storage a cinch. And everything tasted really fresh -- the best apricots and macadamia nuts we've ever eaten.
As for that flaky black salt on the top of these Bliss Balls? It's a new favorite, too. We’ve been using black sea salt on balance bowls all week (it’s great on avocados).
RECIPE: Apricot Macadamia Bliss Balls with Turmeric
We've tasted a lot of energy balls, or "bliss balls," over the years, and we think this combination is both elegant (you could serve these with tea) and unexpected (each ball has a couple of Golden Berries tucked inside). You can whip these up in 10 minutes, then tote them to work for a little mood lifter. They're also a great treat after yoga.
Makes 10 to 12
- 12 whole dried Turkish apricots, roughly chopped
- ½ cup roasted, unsalted macadamia nuts
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 24 golden berries
- 1/4 cup raw shelled pistachios, pulsed or coarsely chopped
- crystal flake black sea salt
- In a food processor, combine macadamia nuts with 1 teaspoon water (or rum!) and blend until you have a smooth paste. Add apricots + turmeric. Pulse until the ingredients are well combined. You'll have a golden, slightly sticky "dough."
- Take two golden berries and wrap about 1 heaping teaspoon of the "dough" around them, using your fingers.
- Roll each bliss ball in chopped pistachios. Top with black sea salt.
